Diane Von Furstenberg and Google
It might not, at first, seem like the likeliest of pairings, but the Belgian fashion designer has teamed up with search giant Google in order to bring technology and fashion together in harmony.
DVF’s New York Fashion Week catwalk show, which showcased the brand’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection, also featured appearances form Google’s ‘Glass’. Glass is the innovative new pair of specs that allow the wearer to film and photograph their viewpoint through a small camera. They also allow the wearer to interact with the digital world in a similar way as they would do with a smartphone.
Diane Von Furstenberg, who is famous for her introduction of the jersey wrap dress, wore the Glass for the week before the catwalk show, and at the show itself. Members of her production and design team, as well as some of the models also sported the Glass. The film that they have collectively captured has been edited together into a documentary in what we can surely consider to be a very bright piece of 21st Century marketing on both the part of DVF and Google. Sergey Brin, Google’s co-founder was at the event, too. Glass firmly affixed to face.
The Glass is expected to be available to developers in 2013, and the public will supposedly be able to get in on the act later that year or in 2014. But what will this mean for fashion? Certainly for the time being it’s an innovative way of viewing life as a model, and Google will surely be hoping that the novelty of the product won’t wear off anytime soon.
Diane Von Furstenberg enjoyed a successful show in New York, not just because of Google’s input, but because her clothing range was simply sensational. Aimed, the designer said, at the women who have “the polish of a princess and the heart of a gypsy”, the line is full of bold colours and billowing sleeves.
The Editeur are excited to see how technology and fashion will continue to interact. The Chester based boutique is equally excited (if not more so!) for DVF’s new edit to line their shelves, and will be looking forward to seeing those statement pieces in the flesh. Until then, the shop stocks a wonderful selection of designer womenswear including Acne, Equipment, and Issa. If you’re looking to talk 21st Century marketing tactics or simply after a pair of killer heels, then The Editeur will be able to help.
