The award was presented to her in recognition of her dedication to the ISTD ballet faculty, her standard of teaching and the many years of service to the ISTD as a senior examiner and committee member.

"It was a great surprise to be given this award and I am truly delighted and honoured," Mrs Woodd told the Courier & Observer.

"I feel so overwhelmed, I do this job because I enjoy it so much."

The 78-year-old first started Roshe in 1954 and over the years the school has earned a reputation for it's exceptionally high standards of teaching and discipline.

The secret to the success of the Felbridge-based school, according to Mrs Woodd, is it still continues with the same philosophy it first started with nearly 60 years ago.

"I have so many great memories of my time here. I am now effectively teaching grand children of the first students I had when I started," she added.

Now with a staff of eight the school boasts classes in ballet, pointe, modern, jazz, tap, Greek, pilates, musical theatre, street and a boys' class. It has a main branch in Felbridge and a junior branch in Crawley.

Candi Trabucatti, vice principal at the school, said: "Mrs Woodd is an example to every child. She is not only an inspiration to them, she is also an inspiration to the teachers, many who have originally been trained by her and share the same values."
