POISON IV – East Grinstead’s only nightclub – wants to stay open later over Christmas and the New Year. In last week’s Courier & Observer, ex-clubber Esther Bertram argued in favour of the club. But town centre resident Carol Lewis, below, is among those opposing the plans. Her family moved to East Grinstead in 1986 – before the demolition of the old cinema and the construction of The Atrium building.

The Poison IV application submitted this year for the festive season includes December 23, 24, 26, 30 and 31 which, taking account of their normal opening days, would mean the residents putting up with 12 nights of late-night activity until 2am with the associated noise and nuisance, excluding December 25.

  2. OBJECTION: Carol Lewis, of Christopher Road, East Grinstead, is against plans for Poison IV to open late on several nights during the Christmas period.

This application by Poison IV is not just for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, and extra days are unreasonable.

I live near the town centre but this does not mean I should have to accept any excessive noise or antisocial behaviour.

The club users can make as much noise as they like while they are in the club, but when leaving this should not have an impact on anyone's sleep.

When The Atrium was built the planning authorities recognised that it was in a noise-sensitive residential area and implemented conditions on opening hours.

The owners of the nightclub would be fully aware of these conditions when they decided to run their business. I feel that had the owners of the club only applied for two additional days – Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve – and not the excessive days, then their application may have been better received.
