Serendib joy at fast club mark award

THE highlight of Serendib's annual dinner and awards night was the celebration of receiving Club Mark status from the ECB.

They have achieved it in record time for the UK - having only existed for four years.

They have been running a junior section for just two years.

A club spokesman said: "The driving force behind this achievement is Azam Riyard and his love towards the game and great enthusiasm moving the club forward rapidly to make this a success.

"All the speakers made it a point to mention club chairman and head coach Azam Riyard's role in facilitating this prestigious achievement.

"The club's members are mainly Sri Lankan, but it is represented by Afghanistanis, British, Indians and Pakistanis. One of the main supporters is French! It truly is a global club."

All age groups to U15 are represented. The junior team were runners-up in the All Island Street Cricket Tournament.

The chief guest was the deputy high commission of Sri Lanka, accompanied by his wife.

Colin Tennant, chairman of Three Bridges Cricket Club, gave a speech.

Main event sponsor Co-Ordination was represented by the owners Gevin and Elizabeth White.

Club President Deepal Ahangama shared key highlights for the year and an overview of the progress of the four years.

"Momumental" progress was capped by winning the Invitation League Knockout Cup by beating the league champions.

Sponsors were thanked - Sri Lankan Airlines, Paradise Travels, Co-Ordination and Grange Hotels.

Patrons such as Kumar Sangakkara, the Hon Henry Smith MP and former West Indian cricketer Alvin Kallicharan. Asanka Niyerapola of Gamboge for the Sri Lankan buffet were also thanked.
