Crawley Town lie in fourth position in the division with just a handful of games left.
Chief executive Alan Williams said on the club's website: "Steve's background and pedigree will help us achieve our aims of pushing into League One and beyond."
"Bringing someone with Steve's stature in football as well as his experience and detailed knowledge of the game to Crawley Town is another important milestone in the development of the club."
Crawley co-owner Susan Carter told BBC Sussex "Steve likes what has happened at Crawley and wanted to come. He brings a wealth of experience over many years and many different levels. You need that, especially at a club that has ambitions.
"He'll assess everything and we'll be working very closely with him.
"The main thing now is to get back into the automatic promotion slots."
