The Peacocks group collapsed due to its £750 million debt and KPMG were called in as administrators.

After completing the purchase of Bonmarché, for an estimated £10 million, Sun announced it would be closing about 160 of the 230 shops.

However, the News spoke to Jane Gray, manager of the branch in Queensway, on Friday, and she revealed the store was safe from closure.

She added: "Unfortunately, the Horsham branch is still in question but the staff here were told on Monday that we would be staying open.

"We are all very, very relieved. The staff have been on tenterhooks so to hear our jobs are safe is excellent news."

The store sells plus size clothes for women over the age of 45.

Meanwhile, staff at Peacocks' Crawley store, in The Pavilion, Queens Square, face an anxious wait over their future.

Administrators KPMG are looking for a potential buyer for the chain, which has 563 stores and 48 concessions.

A total of 50 firms are thought to have registered an interest and initial bids are expected in the next few weeks.
