Who is Crawley's mystery snowman killer?

Wednesday, January 20, 2010, 07:00

A WINTER crime wave has proved to be snow joke for heartbroken youngsters.

Cruel pranksters have been going around the town beheading snowmen - leaving the kids who designed them devastated.

Phantom pranksters have visited Broadfield, Bewbush, Three Bridges, and Gossops Green decapitating all the snowmen in sight.

Nigel Martin, from Three Bridges, contacted the News last week to express his anger at the snow vandals.

He said: "It is upsetting when you see kids spending a lot of time doing something then it's all ruined.

"It is just not on.

"Thoughtless people have gone around smashing in the work that children have done.

"It really is just senseless destruction. It shows no respect whatsoever."

Mr Martin, 42, added: "It is only a snowman, but these are things that people have spent hours making.

"It just shows the mentality of some people."

Three snow bears, a number of snowy igloos and numerous snowmen were demolished during last week's cold snap.

The builders of the three bears were Claire Kavanagh and her children Alice, 10, and Grace, four.

Claire said: "All three of us spent ages building them. I even got a cold from it.

"They wanted to go out the next day and add some more to it.

"They were going to be Goldilocks and a grandpa and grandma bear, a whole family."

The family spent time building a snow igloo, which was also destroyed.

Another angry mum, from Bewbush, also spoke of her "disappointment".

The mum, who did not want to be named, said: "I think these people, whoever it is, see it as some sort of joke – but it is not.

"My two-and-a-half year old toddler had spent five hours building the snowman.

"Her daddy was at work and she wanted to show him what she had done in the morning, but then we woke up and found the snowman didn't have a head."

And the destruction didn't stop there.

The Bewbush mum added: "She then made another one on our front garden and on Tuesday (January 12), they came again and ruined her second one.

"I had to explain to my daughter about people being immature and mean.

"I know some people might think I am being childish by complaining but I think it is immature and unfair that strangers think it is ok to go around and ruin children's accomplishments."

A resident in Broadfield also told the News her snowman had been destroyed.
