Crawley teen admits causing horror smash
Glenn Relph, of Waveney Walk, Furnace Green, was involved in a head-on collision with a van on September 1, a court heard.
The crash, which happened on the A264 near Slinfold, left the 58-year-old van driver with two broken legs and other severe injuries, Crawley Magistrates' Court was told.
The innocent victim has only just begun to walk again and faces two years of treatment before he fully recovers.
Relph, 18, who was also injured in the crash, pleaded guilty to careless driving at last Wednesday's court hearing.
Prosecuting, Sally Edwards said a van with Relph at the wheel drifted onto the wrong side of the road approaching a left hand bend.
She produced early dramatic photographs of the crash taken by emergency services, clearly showing the injured drivers still in their vehicles.
Laura Turner, mitigating, said: "My client, who is of previous good character, was in the fourth week of a driving job having passed his test earlier in the year.
"He can offer no explanation about what happened. He recollects the approach to a left-hand bend but nothing after that.
"He is extremely sorry for the terrible injuries suffered by the other driver."
Relph was fined £200 with £60 costs.
His license was endorsed with nine penalty points which as a recently qualified driver means that he must now retake a test.
