Is Crawley council right to delay bin collections? Vote now

SYMPATHETIC residents have backed the council despite the failure to collect rubbish during the severe weather.

The ice and snow has made it unsafe for bin lorries to reach parts of the town for several weeks.

Residents in Bodiam Close, Pound Hill, were due to have their rubbish collected today (Friday) but for the second week in a row binmen failed to arrive.

Tracey Tomlin, who lives in the road, said: "The rubbish is building up outside my house but I understand the weather has meant it's not been safe to collect it."

Residents in Shaws Road, Northgate, should have their rubbish collected on Monday but bins are still lining the street, as refuse collectors have been unable to get there.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: "I appreciate the council is doing what it can in these tough conditions and I think they are doing the best possible job at the moment."

However, visitors to our website have been less sympathetic with the council.

Quentin, from Crawley, wrote: "Local council...sort the rubbish out. People pay their rates in good faith. Will we get a refund?"

James, from Crawley, added: "Yet again no rubbish collection, mine was last collected on December 23. A couple of days ago the council had the cheek to send me a council tax payment reminder. I told them it was put on hold, much like the work at the council."

The council says it hopes to collect recycling from the worst affected areas on Saturday and Sunday and communal waste from large blocks of flats today (Friday).

Normal collections should resume on Monday.
