Crawley in hunt for promotion

CRAWLEY kept the pressure on Worthing at the top of the table with this comprehensive victory.

The hosts are just two points behind the leaders with two games in hand, putting them in pole position to win promotion this season.

Crawley will look to secure another win this weekend when they face the potentially difficult trip to Lewes.

In fact, it was a good weekend for the club all round as their U15 side won promotion from their league with a 26-5 victory over Midhurst.

It was from messy open play that Ryan Harvey beat the defence after minutes, and ran 50 metres to score the 100th try of his career.

A remarkable achievement, given that this is only his third season of rugby. Alfie Spurgeon converted.

Then, on the stroke of half-time, Kieron Gosling drove the ball from a line-out and sucked in the defence. The ball was re-cycled quickly and fed through the backs for Ben Westphal-Reed to round the defence and score in the corner. Spurgeon converted.

The second half was played in similar vein with Midhurst never letting their visitors relax.

Jonno Salthouse chased hard and picked up the awkward bounce. He then rounded the full-back to score under the posts for a great try. Crawley upped their game, and eventually Westphal-Reed crossed for his second try.

Midhurst did score in the final seconds.
