Village protection group closes its doors

A VILLAGE society will shut its doors after not enough people stepped forward to help on the committee.

But the chairman has not given up hope yet.

The Lingfield and Dormansland Society held a crisis meeting last Thursday (June 25) in an attempt to keep it going.

But, the society could not carry on after no members came forward to join the committee.

Chairman Peta Orr said she is hoping something will be resurrected in the future.

The 79-year-old said: "It's just sad really. People just don't want it. I haven't given up on it altogether."

The village preservation society was started up in the 1970s to protect the village.

She said: "I think at the beginning we saw that the village needed it. We went on an outing and we had meetings every other week. We hoped we could help the historical group to keep that going."

Mrs Orr said the group met for the final time on Sunday (June 28) to have a cup of tea and said their goodbyes.

"I enjoyed being chairman very much. They were very nice people to work with, but everything comes to an end. Something else might come up but at the moment there isn't anything."

Member Graham Marks said it was good when it started and then original members began leaving.

He said: "They tried to make it more social and people didn't want to be on the committee. They also moved the meeting from the evening to the day. I delivered newsletters for them."

"I thought they had a part to play in our community," he added.
