Crowborough students prepare for The Gambia
The students from Years 12 and 13 at Beacon Community College have been busy raising funds for the venture, which will see them spend seven days in Gambia from November 21.
Some of the pupils went last year and enjoyed it so much they have decided to go again, including Ben Stevens, Alex Colville and Hannah Jones, all 17.
Ben said: "Basically the school has been going to Gambia for about 16 years. Some of them say it is the highlight of the year when we come and visit."
Each pupil has to raise £600 for their flight and accommodation, £300 to donate to village projects, and a collection of goods to take with them including pencils, books and toys.
With their £300 contributions, collectively the youngsters hope to take around £16,000 to Gambia, which will then be distributed between eight villages.
The students split into groups and spend the week visiting the villages. Community members will tell them what it is they need and the young people then decide at the end of the trip how much money should be allocated.
Last year, the funds paid for a donkey, water pumps and vaccinations among other essentials.
Alex said he was looking forward to seeing the results of the money that was donated when he visited last year.
He added: "We always give aid to each village."
Ben said: "It was just an eye-opening experience.
"It was absolutely incredible, which is why I wanted to go back."
To raise the money required, pupils have hosted a range of events throughout the year, with the next due to take place on November 17.
The Gambia Show will be held at the college. Doors open at 6pm and the entertainment starts at 7.30pm
Tickets cost £3.50 each and can be purchased at the Beacon Community College reception.
