NEARLY £2,000 was raised at a Herne Junior School festive event, which included a visit from Santa.

The Friends of Herne School Christmas Fair took place at the Herne Road school on Saturday.

Guests enjoyed craft stalls, a performance of carols from the school choir, a raffle and tombolas.

Friends chairman Annette Strudwick said: "This is the third year that we have had the school choir singing at our Christmas fair and it is really nice. It gets us into the Christmas mood."

Youngsters were "excited" when Santa cleared his busy schedule to make an appearance, arriving in a vintage fire engine.

A Game Zone was provided by Year 6 pupils, the pupils were asked to work in pairs to create a game that could be used by visitors.

The total amount raised on the day was around £1,900. This will be spent on a chemical feeder for the school swimming pool.

Mrs Strudwick said: "We had lots of visitors. We were really pleased with the amount we raised."
