Monday, November 10, 2008, 13:20
Janet Ottley who had been the head of Herne Junior School since 2006, died on Sunday November 2 during her maternity leave.
The Heathfield resident has been described by chair of governors Allen Mckay as a "tremendous" and "inspirational" teacher who improved many aspects of school life since her arrival.
Mr Mckay said: "She ran the school in such a way that she inspired people around her to take ownership of the things that needed to change and be improved."
He added: "The children are clearly very upset by what has happened, but our focus is on returning the school to as normal as possible so that the children can carry on learning and developing in the way she would want them to."
Mrs Ottley was due to return to the site on Herne Road next Spring.
Matt Dunkley director of children's services for her employer, East Sussex County Council, said: "Janet was a well respected and popular head teacher whose enthusiasm and wisdom made her a role model to her peers."
He added: "We are giving the school every possible support as it comes to terms with what has happened."
