Sussex policeman charged with death of Uckfield man

A Sussex Police officer has been charged with causing the death of Uckfield man Luke Bland.

Stewart Chalmers, 30, was charged at Worthing police station this afternoon with death by careless driving after he knocked down the pedestrian in his sports car on the A26 at Little Horsted.

Chalmers, who was off duty at the time, is a roads policing constable based at Hove Police Station.

He was bailed to appear at Lewes Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 27 January.

The collision occurred at 1.22am on February 14 when Chalmers' Lotus left the road hit pedestrian Luke Bland, who was assisting at the scene of an earlier minor crash where a Peugeot had left the road.

Luke Bland, 20, of Lime Close, Uckfield, died following the collision.
