'Please don't kill our high streets'

Friday, January 15, 2010, 00:00

Businesses across Wealden's towns and villages have warned car parking charges will mean the death of the high street.

Scrapping free parking has been suggested in a bid to tackle a council budget deficit.

But in a desperate plea to council chiefs, business owners from Crowborough to Heathfield said they couldn't survive without free car parking for their customers.

Sue Weekes of A Thompsett and Sons in Heathfield said: "It ruined Lewes so we definitely don't want it in Heathfield, it would just kill the little town.

"We are all against it. They mustn't kill local business – please don't."
