Time to get boxing clever over phones
With BT threatening to remove two 1930s K6 phone boxes from the village, Northiam Parish Council has agreed to adopt the pair for a nominal fee of £1 each.
The booths will be stripped of their equipment, but rather than lie idle, the parish council is keen they take on a new role within the village and are calling for ideas.
"We're keen on using them in some way," said Cllr Penny Farmer.
"If I had one in my garden, I would probably convert it into an aquarium."
The two boxes, one on Mill Corner, and the other at Horns Cross, were not frequently used, leading to BT's decision, and the council wants ideas that could be of benefit to the village.
"When we talked about it we all agreed we would keep them in the village as they are a part of its history, but it is really down to people to come to us with ideas," said Cllr Farmer.
"I'll admit there hasn't been much of a response yet."
One problem, she revealed, was they are very heavy, with deep foundations, so moving them would be expensive.
"I think they will have to remain in situ," she said.
Cllr Farmer also pointed out the box at Horns Cross was surrounded by overgrown hedges which would need to be cut back.
The idea has been backed by the Northiam Conservation Society. Mervyn Hayes, chairman, said: "We agree we need to keep them in the village because it is part of our heritage. We would like to bring them a lot closer to the village and have them here as a focal point.
"Many people come to see Great Dixter, so it would be great to have them on display in the centre of the village."
