Crowborough boss: There are no excuses

SOMETIMES in football you just have to hold your hands up and say you were beaten by a better team. That is exactly what happened to Crowborough Athletic on Saturday.

The Crows were humbled 7-0 at home to Dulwich Hamlet and will have to put the game to the back of their minds as quickly as possible if they are to bounce back from the defeat.

Joint-boss Steve Johnson admitted as much after the game and accepted there were are no excuses for a performance like that.

"They were just a different class to us," Johnson said. "It just shows how far we have to go to play catch up. Defensively we are very poor at the moment and that includes everybody. We are okay going forward but when you have to score eight to win a game at home there is something wrong.

"They are one of the better sides in the league but even saying that you should not be losing 7-0 at home. I've got to look at myself in that. I'm the manager and I pick the team, so I take responsibility - there are no excuses. We were well and truly battered."

And Johnson says he will not sit back and watch a repeat performance, even if that means some wholesale changes.

"I will bring in 12 new players or the chairman will bring in a new manager - we cannot let that happen again. I've never been beaten 7-0 in my life, not even on the school playground, it's a culture shock to us all.

"I now know whether these guys are good enough to play at this level - they've had long enough. Sooner rather than later it's going to come a time when I say 'sorry son, you are not capable of doing what we need you to do'. If people do not like that then it's tough."

They have the perfect chance to consign the result to the history books tomorrow night, away at Chipstead (Tuesday, 7.45pm).
