Full time: Crawley Town 1 AFC Wimbledon 1

Saturday, October 24, 2009, 16:52

CRAWLEY Town and AFC Wimbledon will have to do it all over again after the two sides drew 1-1 in their FA Cup fourth qualifying round tie at the Broadfield.

Danny Forrest put the Reds ahead after just 12 minutes but Sam Hutton equalised for the Wombles on the stroke of half-time.

The two sides will now have to meet again on Tuesday night in a replay at Kingsmeadow.

Crawley had really tried to promote this Cup clash and had distributed horns with the match programme to help boost the noise levels inside the stadium.

Prior to the game the crowd had been treated to a youth football exhibition between Ifield Edwards and Maidenbower Colts U9s.

The carnival atmosphere helped the game start at a good pace, with both teams forcing corners in the opening minutes.

Thomas Pinault had a great chance to put the Reds ahead in the sixth minute. A good move involving Simon Rusk and Ben Smith found him unmarked in the left-hand corner of the box but the The midfielder fired wide.

But Town soon made their early advantage count as Forrest put them ahead on 12 minutes as Wimbledon were made to pay for failing to clear Rusk's cross.

Forrest pounced on the loose ball to fire a powerful shot into the top corner past Wombles' keeper James Pullen, who will have been disappointed not have done better with the effort that came in from a tight angle.

The game became a scrappy affair, with both sides working hard but unable to find the necessary quality to split apart the defences.

Danny Kendwell found some space on the right and his cross was only just cut out by Adam Quinn before Jon Main could get his shot away.

At the other end Jefferson Louis tested Pullen before Pinault fired over.

It looked as though Town would go in to half-time ahead but two minutes before the break Hutton equalised for the visitors.

The midfielder picked up the ball on the edge of the Reds' area and drilled a low shot past Simon Rayner into the back of the net.

Smith had the ball in the back of the net in first-half injury time but referee Rob Whitton had already blown for a foul and the Crawley player was booked for kicking the ball away.

Crawley started the second-half well and Forrest came within a whisker of putting his side ahead again. Some smart build up play from Ben Smith sent him through on goal but his finish was straight at Pullen who produced a good save to divert the ball out for a corner.

On the hour the game began to open up at a remarkable rate. Louis fired a powerful shot just wide from 30 yards, before at the other end Wimbledon's Brett Johnson's low cross somehow evaded everyone in the Town box.

Rayner was almost embarrassed as Main hit the post from an unbelievably tight angle as the visitors' started to take the upper hand for the first time in the game.

The incident seemed to damage Rayner's confidence and it started to effect the big keeper's kicking as he scuffed two goal-kicks in a matter of minutes.

But with 20 minutes to go Forrest almost put Town ahead again when he fired a curling shot just wide of the post following some good work from Smith and Louis on the right.

Crawley were extremely fortunate when the referee gave only a corner after Main was seemingly hauled down in the box by Glenn Wilson.

A mistake from Quinn allowed Kedwell in on the Crawley goal but the forward hit an optimistic shot into the side netting when Johnson was better placed in the middle.

Pullen was fortunate to stay on the pitch after seemingly punching Forrest in the face. A high ball was caught by Pullen before he was fouled by Forrest, however, the AFC keeper reacted badly and it looked as though he struck the Crawley player in the face.

Players from both sides rushed to join the incident and a number of objects were thrown on the pitch by the Town fans behind the goal, After talking to both linesmen the referee booked both players and Cogan, setting up an interesting sub-plot for Tuesday night's replay.
